When to use
  • Primary prevention statin discussions in adults 40 to 79 with LDL 70 to 189 mg/dL and no diabetes-only indication.
Pearls and pitfalls
  • The equations include race; the AHA PREVENT equations (2023) are race-free and add kidney function.
  • Tends to overestimate risk in many contemporary populations.
  • Not for patients with known ASCVD or LDL of 190 or higher (already statin candidates).
Why use

The equation behind the 2018 cholesterol guideline's risk categories.

Risk = 1 − S₀^exp(Σβx − mean), with sex- and race-specific coefficients (Goff 2014)
