When to use
  • Planning a total IV iron course for iron-deficiency anemia.
Pearls and pitfalls
  • Each IV product has its own maximum single dose and total course on its label.
  • Use ideal or lean weight in obesity; many references cap weight at 90 kg.
  • Not for anemia without iron deficiency.
Why use

The standard way to size a full IV iron course.

Iron (mg) = weight × (target Hb − actual Hb) × 2.4 + stores (500 mg, or 15 mg/kg if under 35 kg)
