AHA PREVENT risk (10- and 30-year CVD, ASCVD, heart failure)
The 2023 race-free American Heart Association equations, including kidney function, for adults 30 to 79.
Inputs
4 of 12SexUsed by the equation
years
Actual (total) body weight
Used for eGFR (CKD-EPI 2021).
mmHg
On blood pressure medicine
On a statin
Diabetes
Current smoker
Patient values are shared with every calculator.
When to use
- Primary prevention in adults 30 to 79 without known cardiovascular disease.
Pearls and pitfalls
- Race is not an input; eGFR and BMI are.
- PREVENT estimates are generally lower than the Pooled Cohort Equations; treatment thresholds for PREVENT are still being defined.
- 30-year estimates are intended for ages 30 to 59.
Why use
The current AHA risk equations, with heart failure risk alongside ASCVD.
Risk = e^x ÷ (1 + e^x), x = Σβ × centered predictors (age, non-HDL, HDL, SBP, diabetes, smoking, BMI, eGFR, treatments, interactions)
