Powder volume and reconstitution
Diluent to add to a dry powder for a target concentration, accounting for the volume the powder occupies.
Inputs
0 of 2mg/mL
If known
mL
Or use the label's directions
mL
Optional
mg/mL
When to use
- Making a concentration other than the one the label's reconstitution directions give.
- Working out a powder's volume from the label's own directions.
Pearls and pitfalls
- Enter the powder volume if you know it, or enter the label's diluent volume and resulting concentration to derive it.
- Always check the label for approved diluents and concentrations.
Why use
The powder adds volume, so adding diluent equal to the final volume makes the solution weaker than intended.
Final volume = drug ÷ concentration; diluent = final volume − powder volume; powder volume = (drug ÷ label concentration) − label diluent volume
